Projects
From research prototypes at the Hasso Plattner Institute to apps shipped by Digital Masterpieces — a selection of projects I worked on.
Apps
Waterbrush
Watercolor rendering of photos on iPhone and iPad, simulating pigment dispersion, wet-in-wet effects and paper structure in real time.
Clip2Comic
Turns photos and videos into cartoons, comics and caricatures on iPhone, iPad and Mac — including 4K cartoon videos, processed entirely on-device.
Research
Artistic Control in Image Stylization
Giving users fine-grained artistic control over filtering and stylization — local and multi-level parameterization, art-directable strokes, editable texture and shape, temporal consistency in video, and local content and style control for diffusion models.
Neural Style Transfer on Mobile Devices
Pictory and MaeSTrO — combining neural style transfer with image filtering, and orchestrating styles locally on mobile devices with adaptive networks.
Depicting Motion in Stylized Photos and Videos
ViVid and MotionViz — mobile apps that estimate motion with neural networks and LiDAR, and express it through artistic design elements such as ghosts, motion lines, halos and animated silhouettes.
Oil Paint Filtering
Interactive image stylization with an oil paint look — feature-aware color quantization with dominant color palettes and real-time paint-texture synthesis, with per-pixel control through interactive painting on desktop and mobile GPUs.
Cartography-Oriented 3D Geovisualization
Non-photorealistic rendering of virtual 3D city models, landscapes and water surfaces following cartographic design principles — the topic of my doctoral thesis.
Level-of-Abstraction Visualization
Interactive, context-aware abstraction of virtual 3D city models and scenes — seamless transitions between graphic styles and edge-preserving image filtering for level-of-abstraction texturing that preserves depth cues.
